Few places allow you to experience the history of the Hunter Valley quite like Lochinvar House.

The story of the property reaches back to the early 1820s, when the Hunter Valley was still in its formative years of European settlement. Lochinvar was among the earliest land grants in the district, associated with Scottish-born entrepreneur Leslie Duguid, who received a substantial grant of land in the area and gave the district the name Lochinvar.

A large residence was established on the estate during this early period, constructed with convict labour and using locally produced bricks and sandstone. Positioned overlooking the Hunter River, the property formed part of the early development of one of the Hunter Valley’s most significant agricultural districts.

The estate also played a role in the beginnings of the region’s wine industry. Grapes were being cultivated at Lochinvar from the early 1840s, making the property part of the area’s early viticultural story — long before the Hunter Valley became the renowned wine destination it is today.

As the surrounding district developed, Lochinvar grew from an early rural settlement into an established township. The property and surrounding estate witnessed the transformation of the Hunter Valley from its early colonial beginnings through generations of farming, viticulture and country life.

Today, Lochinvar House retains the atmosphere of that earlier era. Its high ceilings, wide hallways, generously proportioned rooms, period character and antique furnishings provide a glimpse into the grandeur of Australia’s colonial past.

Set across approximately 88 acres of the historic Kaludah Estate, the house looks towards the peaceful landscape surrounding Loch Katrine and the Hunter Valley. Guests can experience the character of a historic homestead while enjoying the comforts of a relaxed country retreat.
